CWGC Communal Cemetery at Mers-les-Bains

Set into the hillside on the northern edge of the town up against the wall that encircles the towns cemetery.

 

Against the wall about 11 burials only four known and all from the Dieppe raid. A sad reminder.

The 1st Bat. was part of the 4th Inf. Brigade, 2nd Canadian Inf. Div. Landed at Dieppe on the 14 August 1942. 582 men landed, 197 killed, 174 captured & 194 wounded.

I could find no information on the Internet about this. It just shows about the forgotten civilian casualties that also must have happened when the area was liberated.

 

The battery position was on the top of the hill and the bunkers came down right up to the cemetery wall. *(Heers Kusten Batterie) (an Army battery).
