Wn309 Goury, K.V.U.Gruppe Joburg

Goury on the tip of the Cotentin peninsular, looking out over too Alderney. A small tidal fishing port, of no real use to the types of even small warships that were being used by the German's. E-Boats would not fit in well and there is no cargo handling facility.
Here was probably a small platoon of infantry, some manning a 5cm KwK L/40 Pak. They fortified and built three small shelters to live in and would have used the two or more fisherman's cottages. They would have made themselves home.
They may have built a few trenches, certainly used a lot of barbed wire and mines.

The German army map of the area showing all its defences, this make would have been updated by the map maker, usually a Major in the local HQ. His job was to drive or ride a horse? around his area and check what has been built since his last visit and update his map, which would then go to higher authorities and they would update their maps and then pass the information on up the chain.

This is the small fishing cottages with a wall surrounding them, the photo was taken in 1922, so its probably very accurate to what was there in 1940. Three SK/Vf shelters. SK Sonderkonstruktionen built to Vf light field construction.
Just one room shelter with maybe a stove to keep it warm in winter and sets of bunk beds around the walls.

Bricked up wal filling in a door and a window, this may have been done to stop an enemy access to the yard.
The British in the early part of the war, sent out raiding parties, to capture the small garrison and steal any radio codes and secret information. One of the successful raids was on the Casquets lighthouse to the west of Guernsey. Where the whole garrison was captured and a lot of information was found out. So the small garrison here would not like that to happen to them.
The raid was in 1942 by the 'Small Scale Raiding Force'. Their HQ was Anderson Manor in Dorset. A place I know very well.

Barbed wire screw picket set in concrete. All along the rocky coast, can be found these picket posts set into either rocks or blocks of concrete.

This could be German barbed wire left over.
