RAF Ringstead Chain Home Radar Station (AMES12B) 1941 to 1956.

From the A353, turn down to Ringstead and the Beach Cafe, where there is a pay car park. Alternatively, take the turning to Osmington Mills and walk east from the Smugglers Inn.

There are public footpaths that pass all the items connected to the radar site.
RAF Ringstead was part of the Chain Home (CH) and Chain Home Low (CHL) transmitter/receiver radar network. Construction started in 1940, though the site was completed too late for the Battle of Britain. It continued in service until 1956, by which time it was utilizing the new 'Rotor Radar' system. In 1963, part of the site was taken over by the USAF as the 2180 Communications Squadron, operating a Tropospheric Scatter System link. This system closed down in 1974, and the aerials were removed shortly after.

Power for the station was supplied by the National Grid. In the event of a power failure, a powerful generator would automatically start up to maintain the system's operation.

This building is the 11 - Standby Set House (CM - 3017/41). This entrance provided access to the facility, which contained the backup power generation equipment required to keep the radar station operational if the national grid supply failed.

This is the personnel entrance to the 11 - Standby Set House (CM - 3017/41). Planning permission has been applied for to turn the structure into a holiday home; it is actually a very good idea, as it will help preserve the site.

They may have been issued with for bicycles.

The way Chain Home worked was very like turning a flood light on and pointing it outwards away from where you wish to defend. This (flood light) was four steel framed aerials. Laid out in a straight line pointing towards your enemy. When an aircraft flew into the (flood light), the reflection is bounced off the plane and returned to (east coast four, west coast two, aerials) here two large wooden aerials. — 4 x TX - Transmit aerials steel. The bounced reflection is received in the two RX bunkers and when seen by the operators, a message would be sent to a filter station. They would work out the threat and then send up fighters to intercept the bombers.

John O'Neil was stationed here in the 1950's when he was doing his National Service. The picture is the Ringstead Cricket team, all members of the Chain Home Radar crew.

This structure is either a cable bridge or a pathway; I suspect it was a bridge designed to carry very heavy cables across the stream from the aerials to the bunkers.

The heavy-duty cabling was routed from the transmitter and receiver aerials back to the bunkers, often carried across the terrain on bridges or through protected conduits to ensure the station remained operational.

RAF Ringstead Chain Home Radar Station (AMES12B) 1941 to 1956.

We have just been walking through the far wood and down to the sea; now, walking west along the coast path, there is a stile on the right. You cross this track between two fields and then enter the next wood that runs north.

The field we can see in this picture shows no signs of what it once held. There were twin parabolic aerials of the US Air Force Tropospheric Scatter radio-relay link to Spain. The system at Ringstead was operated by the USAF No. 6 Detachment, 2180 Communications Squadron from December 1963 to 1974, with the two massive aerial arrays dismantled by March 1975.

RAF Ringstead Chain Home Radar Station (AMES12B) 1941 to 1956.

The US Air Force Tropospheric Scatter radio-relay link to Spain consisted of huge aerials, 150ft high. As children, I remember coming to Ringstead while these were still present; although I recall the four steel masts or their remains, I do not ever remember seeing these aerials. The system was closed by 1970 and dismantled in 1974.

USAF Scatter Station

Microwave radio messages could be sent over long distances by using the Troposphere as a sounding board and bouncing the signals back to the next station.

USAF Scatter Station

A crawler crane like the one that was used here. I was told they brought a crane on a lorry all the way down and along the track/roadway to the Scatter station, to remove it. Everything was removed.

This concrete base belongs to one of the 240-foot timber towers used for the 'R' (Receiver) aerials. If you explore the woodland, you can find the four bases that supported the tower structure.

One of the RX - Receiver wooden aerials concrete bases. The path looking south reveals the four bases situated together. They are hard to find in summer, so head out in winter when they should show up more clearly.

All the insides of the 'C' type blocks would have looked exactly alike. The reason that there are two is that if one had been hit by a bomb, the other one could take over and continue working.
