Operation Market Garden (Arnhem)

Paratroopers of the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade (under Major General Stanisław Sosabowski) were dropped by transport aircraft, their heavy equipment and vehicles were carried in a large fleet of transport gliders. Because of severe weather constraints and crowded airfields across the UK, the Polish glider fleet was launched from Southern English bases, including RAF Tarrant Rushton and RAF Down Ampney. Handley Page Halifax bombers from Tarrant Rushton's 298 and 644 Squadrons towed these gliders across the North Sea to the drop zones near Arnhem.

Bad weather in England delayed the main parachute drop. The first glider-borne elements arrived on September 18, while the main parachute force dropped into Driel on the south bank of the Rhine on September 21, 1944.
Tasked with supporting the trapped British forces in Oosterbeek, the Poles faced fierce German resistance and a lack of adequate crossing equipment. Despite this, their presence forced German commanders to divert roughly 2,500 troops away from the British perimeter.
Under heavy pressure, elements attempted river crossings before helping cover the final Allied withdrawal across the Rhine on September 25–26, 1944. The brigade lost nearly 400 men during the operation.
