WN Bruneval Est.

Set up on a high bank, this R680 casemate with a 7.5cm Pak 40 inside, would have dominated this valley. Any vehicles/tank coming up the valley, would have been decimated by probably the second best anti tank gun in the German armoury of the time. This never happened as the Allies landed in lower Normandy and when this area was captured, it was captured from the rear and not from the front.

The IGNF 1974 zoomed in on the casemate covering the valley.

Another air photo dated 1947 and it looks like there was a defence position, behind the casemate with a trench system,? Also a lot of bomb craters from Allied bombing of radar stations in 1944 on the run up to D-Day.

This is an R680 casemate at StP Vrist and shows the type of bunker that was here. I have added in red the flanking wall that the Bruneval bunker has.
