INFORMATION:

The plan of RAF Stoney Cross. As you see it was a very extensive airfield. It started life in 1941 like RAF Charlton Horethorne Winkleigh as a sort of secret airfield, later it was decided to make it into a full 'A' class. In the end it had Army co-operation, glider/airborne, fighter bomber, light & heavy bomber, transport, bot US and British. So just about everything flew from here. Units came and went, the Americans stationed B17's for a while and by D-day it had Lightning's flying interdiction sorties over France. US Waco gliders were assembled and flown out. The Airborne used it for a while.
