INFORMATION:

Portland Island a block of lime stone four & a half miles x one & three quarters and rises to 400ft at its highest point - The Verne. The stone has been quarried for centuries and all over the world, some buildings that use Portland stone are St Paul's Cathedral in London & the UN building in New York. The Royal Navy built a large harbour and the army a fortress on the hill above.
